Description:

An informational brochure about the Steampunk band, Steam Powered Giraffe.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):

I had discovered this band about a week before being assigned this project. I was so excited about the band that I decided to do my brochure on them, perhaps give them some publicity.

First, I had to create a new logo in Illustrator. It was a bit difficult because the band’s official logo has a giraffe on it, so I couldn’t use it in my logo without it looking too similar. I instead drew Rabbit’s hat and goggles and a wicked smile. On the piece of paper that I drew the logo on, I folded it in a way to make it easier to see just the logo. That folding is the unique folding that I used in the final brochure. My teacher thought the folding was too strange and troublesome, but my fellow peers loved the unique layout.

Next, I used Photoshop to create the textured background. It was a red leather base with rusted metal masked on top of it. I also put the robots into frames and masked the white glow behind them. I also cut out the silhouette I used for the textwraped image.

Lastly, I added details like the orange and teal swirls. I did these in Illustrator. The layout was designed in Indesign.

Message:

Steam Powered Giraffe is not your average band and is work looking into.

Audience:

Younger people (16-21) who like Steampunk or something kind of weird.

Description:

An original web page describing the thought process that went into making a logo.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):

I used a logo that I made in Illustrator, one that I’m particularly fond of. I started by stating why I had chosen DeviantArt’s mascot, Fella, for my subject. Then I went into the design elements that make it work.

I did the HTML on my personal laptop in Notepad++, which was easy. For the CSS, I went to BYUI’s computer lab to get some help. There, I used TextWrangler on their Macs.

I repeated the sharp green colors and aligned many things on the left side of the text. The corner triangles create asymmetry.

Message:

That I love stylish art and that I didn’t like everything about DA’s new logo.

Audience:

People who are curious about my work.

Top Thing Learned:

HTML and CSS

Changes made to the CSS:

Got rid of the border and all background color blocks. Replaced them with my own image. Made the whole body text narrower. Made the text colors white or green. Added extra padding to image and h2 heading. Added a Google font. Changed the link colors.

Description:

A personal redesign of DeviantArt’s logo, plus original business card and letterhead layout.

Process:

Adobe Illustrator and InDesign were used.

The devilish face on the back of the business card is an icon of DeviantArt’s official mascot, Fella (who doesn’t get enough attention, in my opinion). He was drawn using the ellipse and pen tool. I also drew the ‘D’ icon that’s used in the card and the letterhead in Illustrator. The main reason I chose this company was because they had recently redesigned their own logo, and I didn’t like it much. So I took this assignment as an opportunity to design a look that I would prefer.

With these icons, I worked on the business card first. I decided to place Fella on the back by himself so he didn’t distract from the text. I drew the triangles in the corner so that the card looked fuller, also giving the ‘D’ icon something to interact with. The whole look is modern, clean, and young, which is the message of DeviantArt.

I simply aimed for repetition in the letterhead. I created nothing new, simply reused. The corner triangles are used again as a watermark.

Message:

DeviantArt is a fun and modern online business for artists.

Audience:

Younger or spirited artists.

Top Thing Learned:

Practice with the pen tool.

Project 5: Logos

Project-5-new

Description:

A logo design for a fictional company that sells specialty, organic mushroom in caves for the ideal environment.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):

I started with thinking of a company. The Underground is a company in my own fictional story. They grow unique mushrooms in caves for a majority of their profit, but also grow poisonous mushrooms upon ‘special request’. So for this company, the logo design needed to be unsuspecting to the public yet grungy and dark. I sketched some professional design ideas and some fun ones. I searched online for the earthy font and used the pen tool to draw the mushrooms. I then used the eraser tool to chip away at the lines so it would match the font.

Done in Adobe Illustrator.

Message:

These mushrooms are special, unique items and the atmosphere is cool and relaxed.

Audience:

People who are hippies, organic lovers, or like unique items. A younger audience overall.

Top Thing Learned:

How to use the pen tool and how to use downloaded fonts.

Color Scheme and Color Names:

Monochromatic black

Project 4 Montage

Project 4 new

Description:

A spiritual inspirational image with a Book of Mormon reference and vintage layering.

Process:

I chose the quote first and got inspiration from the photos that I took late week. I found the picture of Christ online. I masked the background away from the Christ image and the edges away from my flower photo. I also chose vintage textures from online and played with the color levels to match the textures. I used white drop shadows around the text to make it legible. I aligned the text with Christ’s elbow and the large leaves at the bottom, respectively.

Done in Photoshop.

Message:

Everything bears proof of Christ, even the smallest flowers.

Audience:

For a more feminine or traditional audience.

Top Thing Learned:

How to mask. It’s extremely simple yet effective.

Filter / Colorization used and where it was applied:

I toned down the original greens in the stems and the reds on the background flowers.

Color scheme and color names:

Overall, Monochromatic gold

Project 3: Photography

Project 3 Photography new

Description:

A full bleed motivational poster. The fitness shirt is from BYU-Idaho and the symbol in the background is from the popular RPG Skyrim.

Process:

At first, I had gone out in the evening and took pictures of the plant life. I knew this isn’t what I wanted to do. I had predicted that many other designers would do plant life or something of the sort. I wanted to do something different, something I more related to. I chose to design a motivational poster for myself as well as others.

I did the whole project in Photoshop. Looking back, I should have edited the photo in Photoshop and then transition to Indesign. I had an absurd amount of trouble regarding shapes and colors. As required, I included my color swatches from my color scheme. I chose diamonds to repeat the diamond-shaped symbol in the background. I also chose the dark blue lines in the title to repeat the line on the shirt. I chose monochromatic to create a more serious, even depressing mood. Note: the right side of the poster is a little messy because it was designed to include the cropping that would occur in printing.

Message:

The message is to gamers, that there are more important things to do in life and that will probably benefit you more.

Audience:

All gamers, specifically BYU-Idaho males and particularly those who exercise, regularly or not.

Top Thing Learned:

I constantly forget that I’m not creating a piece of personal art. I’m creating messages for the public. In particular, I had negated proximity in my original design, making the message much less effective.

Monochromatic, blue
